Troubleshooting

IMPORTANT: This description is valid for SL4 and SL5 only. For SL6 see Troubleshooting SL6 Live.

LiveCD hangs during booting
Try to boot with failsafe. The failsafe option is equal to boot with nonet simplex apm=off acpi=off noapic nofstab.
No graphics (I)
Try to boot with linux nox. This will start the LiveCD without X.
Aftwerwards login on the text console and start the X Server with the command startx.
No or poor graphics (II)
Try to boot with linux simplex. This will only do a simple X server auto configuration.
Or press CTRL-ALT-F1 to change to text console. Login as root and run system-config-display --reconfig. Aftwards restart the xserver, for example with "init 3; init 5".
Or within KDE go to the KDE menu -> System Settings -> Display.
LiveCD hangs when starting udev
Try to boot with linux nohotplug. Or try to disable some kernel modules for hot-plugging by setting them on the blacklist: for example linux blacklist=snd-hda-intel. Both boot parameters were added 2010-06-14, see boot parameters
Use local printer
If not yet running, start the local cups server /etc/init.d/cups start. Use the system config tool system-config-printer to configure your local attached printer.
Wrong keyboard layout
Within KDE go to the KDE menu -> System Settings -> Keyboard. Or run as root system-config-keyboard.
Or press CTRL-ALT-F1 to change to text console. Login as root and run system-config-keyboard.
After LiveCD install, sound works for root and sluser accounts, but not for other users
This is a LiveCD bug. In file /etc/inittab replace as root the line
```
6:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty --autologin sluser tty6
```
with
```
6:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty6
```
Problem solved on LiveCD created after 2009-08-01.
No sound
Within KDE go to the KDE menu -> System Settings -> Soundcard Detection. Additionally, start "kmix" as user and check if the output volumes are switched on.
No network
Try to start the LiveCD with boot parameter nonet: linux nonet. Aferwards try to configure the network with system-config-network. Maybe you have first to remove the devices eth0 and eth1 in the Devices tab and then add a new device. Also check out if your network card is listed in the Hardware tab.
Gparted crashes or is not running
Sometimes gparted crashes with the error *** glibc detected *** gparted: double free or corruption. This seems to be a problem with parted which tries to scan cdrom filesystem. Just try to start gparted once again.
Kernel panic
Since the RHEL kernel normally runs quite stable, most probably the unionfs kernel module is the reason for the kernel panic. It does not happen very often, but it can happen. Particularly, the update to unionfs version 1.1.5 was an improvement. Any help to make unionfs more stable on RHEL4 kernel is very appreciated! On SL5 aufs is used instead of unionfs. Aufs seems to be much more stable, but is not avaialbe for RHEL4 kernel 2.6.9.
SATA DVD/CD-ROM drive
Some SATA DVD/CD-ROM drive are not recognized correctly. Try to boot with boot parameter all_generic_ide: linux all_generic_ide.
